The Affiliated Hospital of the Medical Department of the University of Tokyo is composed of diagnosis and treatment departments (6 departments, 37 diagnosis and treatment departments), central facilities departments (38 departments), and clinical research departments (7 departments). The hospital has 3888 employees and 1217 beds (1163 general wards and 54 psychiatric wards, as of the end of 2012). In 2012, the number of inpatients was 392200, the number of outpatients was 754372, the number of surgical operations was 10752, the number of deliveries was 855, and the number of emergency patients was 18505. It is one of the few large comprehensive hospitals in Japan that integrates medical treatment, teaching and scientific research.

Hospital characteristics
