Tohoku University Hospital
Tohoku University Hospital was established in 1817 as a university hospital with a long history in Japan.

Since its establishment, the hospital structure has changed, and the Miyagi Prefectural Hospital and Sendai Public Hospital merged in 1915 to become the Tohoku Imperial University Hospital. Currently, Tohoku University Hospital has a history of 102 years. We have always been at the forefront of medicine and healthcare in Japan, while gradually taking root in the local community. There are now 1,225 beds and approximately 3,000 outpatients per day, and a new clinical building is currently under construction in order to provide a high standard of care to a wide range of patients. The new hospital building will have an operating theatre as its core, equipped with new medical technology, and an ICU and emergency centre. This will enable us to achieve the goal of providing fully functional and safe state-of-the-art medical care.

Tohoku University Hospital is a hospital that aims for patient, friendly treatment and advanced medicine; it places emphasis on the development, application and evaluation of cutting-edge medical technology; promotes consistent and reliable original research; trains medical staff who place a high value on the quality of patients and care, and achieves a balance between respect for humane medicine and highly specialised advanced healthcare.

The guiding principle of Tohoku University Hospital is "a harmonious hospital dedicated to patient-friendly and advanced medical care". Our mission is to provide high quality and friendly healthcare, and as an advanced treatment hospital, we are committed to implementing advanced and sophisticated medical care, while developing medical technology and training highly skilled medical professionals across institutions.

In addition to medical safety, another of our extremely critical objectives is the development and delivery of advanced medical care. Our hospital has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to conduct the Translational Research Coordination Support Training Programme, and is also a core hospital designated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for clinical research. As you can see, we play a pivotal role in Japan's efforts to develop medical devices and research new drugs. In response to the expectations of society, we will put our strengths in knowledge from a comprehensive university to work to establish an integrated clinical research and development system centred on a centre for clinical research, innovation and education. In addition, we will promote and encourage the development of highly qualified medical personnel who will be at the forefront of medical care in the future and strive to become an international hub for medical innovation.
